My wife and I are standing with the realtor looking at the nearly completed new house.
It’s not ours. One he’s showing us. A new neighborhood with new houses going up.
He can tell we like the house.
He asks us a few questions about our kids. About guests. In-laws coming.
Within minutes my wife is thinking aloud which room will be the younger child’s. Which one will be the oldest’s. Where the in-laws will stay when they visit. Where the furniture will go, and how the kitchen will be arranged.
The realtor was quiet.
He asked the right questions. Let my wife and I start answering. Then he shut up.
Within minutes we had moved into the house. We were living there.
We could see the cars in the garage. The kids playing in the backyard. The family gathered around the table.
Sold!
(Ok, it’s not really sold, but it might as well be. We can’t stop talking about it.)
The realtor didn’t have to sell us on the house. He simply led us down the path to selling ourselves.
It’s a well-known selling technique, but most small business owners and artists don’t understand how to implement it.
Car salesmen do for sure!
“Would you like a test drive?”
It’s not hard to picture yourself in a car when you are in fact IN said car.
The point here is this. To inlist your customers as sales agents, you must get them to picture their life with the problem solved or the result gained.
Once they can picture the result or solution, assuming it’s one they want, they will willingly begin selling themselves.
